Formally known as West of the Ashley, it is one of the six distinct areas of the city proper of Charleston, with an estimated population of 75,000. Its name is derived from the fact that the land is west of the Ashley River.
Flanked by the scenic waterfront vistas and marshes of the Ashley and Stono Rivers and ancient moss draped oak trees, initial neighborhoods west of the Ashley were developed in the 1950s with its largest growth occurring throughout the 1970s and 80s.
West Ashley is where Darius Rucker, former lead singer of the band Hootie and the Blowfish and current country star, grew up. He graduated from Middleton High School. Stephen Colbert, host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, is a graduate of Porter-Gaud School located in West Ashley.
West Ashley is home to the region's largest indoor shopping mall, Citadel Mall and the city's newest hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. The city also has many beautiful trails and parks as well as historic parks including Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Weekly Farmer’s Markets and local events offer great ways to get to know the community. West Ashley is also home to many restaurants, coffee shops, shopping centers, and is just minutes from downtown Charleston.
Some of the hottest neighborhood in West Ashley include Carolina Bay, Ashland Plantation, Edgewater Park, The Crescent, West Ashley Plantation, Old Towne Acres, Ashley Hall Plantation, Ashley Hall Landing, Shadow Moss Plantation, and Hickory Farms.
